Return Home Interviews

  • Kenamo Assessments provides independent Return Home Interviews for children and young people following a missing episode.

    Interviews are conducted by appropriately experienced practitioners who seek to engage the young person in a sensitive, non-judgemental and trauma-informed manner. The young person’s views and experiences remain central throughout the conversation.

  • Depending on the circumstances, the interview may explore:

    • The reasons the young person went missing

    • Where they went and what happened during the missing episode

    • Any harm, abuse, exploitation or other risks they may have experienced

    • Push and pull factors associated with the missing episode

    • Their experiences at home, in care or within the community

    • Relationships or circumstances affecting their safety and wellbeing

    • Protective factors and available sources of support

    • Measures that may reduce the likelihood of further missing episodes

  • The interview is arranged following the young person’s return and takes place in a setting where they feel safe and able to speak openly.

    The practitioner will explain the purpose of the interview, how the information may be used and the limits of confidentiality. Relevant safeguarding concerns will be shared with the appropriate professionals in accordance with the applicable procedures.

  • A clear record of the interview is prepared for the commissioning local authority or relevant professionals.

    The record may identify:

    • The young person’s account and views

    • Risks, safeguarding concerns and protective factors

    • Relevant support needs

    • Recommended actions or referrals

    • Information that may assist future safety planning and professional decision-making
