Special Guardianship Order (SGO) Assessments
-
Kenamo Assessments undertakes Special Guardianship Assessments for individuals being considered as special guardians for a child.
Each assessment is tailored to the circumstances of the child and prospective special guardian and is undertaken by suitably qualified and experienced professionals in accordance with the applicable statutory requirements, commissioning instructions and any directions of the court.
-
Depending on the referral, the assessment may consider:
The prospective guardian’s motivation and understanding of special guardianship
Their relationship with the child and knowledge of the child’s needs
Their capacity to provide safe, stable and nurturing long-term care
Their personal and family history, lifestyle and parenting experience
The child’s physical, emotional, developmental, cultural and identity needs
Relationships within the wider family network
The proposed guardian’s ability to support appropriate family time and relationships
Household circumstances, accommodation and practical arrangements
Support networks and any services or assistance that may be required
Identified strengths, concerns and potential risks
-
The assessment process may include:
Structured interviews with the prospective guardian
Home visits
Interviews with relevant household members
Consideration of the prospective guardian’s relationship with the child
Review of relevant records, background information and required checks
Consultation with family members and professionals where appropriate
Consideration of proposed family-time arrangements and support needs
The precise process will depend on the statutory requirements, the commissioning instructions and the circumstances of the child and family.
-
A clear and analytical report is prepared setting out the evidence considered and assessing the prospective guardian’s ability to meet the child’s needs over the long term.
The report identifies strengths, areas of concern, support needs and relevant family-time considerations before providing balanced conclusions and recommendations to assist local-authority and court decision-making.
